THE FACTS ON ADD OR ADHD
STOP DRUGGING OUR CHILDREN
"We are drugging entirely normal children. ADHD is 100% fraud." - Fred Baughman, Jr., M.D., Pediatric Neurologist Message from Citizens Commission of Human Rights International
Did you know…
- that from 1988 to 1994 the use of antidepressants amongst our youth soared 3 to 5 fold according to a study of 1 million youths, ages 2 to 19?
- that 6 million children, roughly 10% of all 6-18 year old boys, are on Ritalin to get by in school?
- that since 1991 there is more than 540% increase in Ritalin prescriptions across Canada?
- we have an epidemic of so-called ADHD with 20 million prescriptions written in the past year?
According to the research there is absolutely no objective criteria by which so-called ADHD can be confirmed to exist OR scientific evidence proving that a chemical imbalance in the brain is responsible for ADHD. There is no data - this is not science!
"Children are being forced to take a drug that is stronger than cocaine for a disease that is yet to be proven." - B. Eakman, President, National Education Consortium 2001
Attention Deficit Disorder on the Rise!
More statistics:
- It's estimated that 3-5% of school age children have difficulty focusing and learning and most are boys.
- The third highest cause of death in American children between ages 5 to 17 is now suicide.
- Ritalin for ages 2 to 4 increased 2-3 fold; that is 200-300% increase.
- Ritalin is a member of the cocaine family and has more potent side effects and risks than cocaine and amphetamines; listed by the FDA in the high addiction category with cocaine, morphine, opium, etc.
- New prescriptions for ADHD drugs have gone up more than 38% in the past 5 years. (Time 2001)
- There is a link between Prozac and related antidepressants and teenage violence.
ADD is a syndrome characterized by inattention, impulsiveness, non-completion of tasks, often accompanied by hyperactivity and given the ADHD label. There is no proven genetic or pathological background.
The ADHD symptoms can be caused by numerous physical conditions, allergic reaction or lack of nutrition.
According to neurophysiologist, Dr. Carla Hannaford, these children are 'stressed' out children and reclassifies them as "Stressed-Out Survival-Oriented Humans", the SOSOH children. We need to use alternatives and address the underlying stressors.
More facts:
- According to Physicians Desk Reference Guide, increased heart rate and blood pressure can result from the use of the major stimulant drug for ADHD. Other adverse reactions of Ritalin include nervousness, insomnia, nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, blood pressure and pulse changes, tachycardia, angina, abdominal pain and toxic psychosis.
- Suicide is a major complication of withdrawal from this stimulant drug.
- Childhood use of mind-altering drugs is a major contributing factor to later cocaine dependence. Remember Ritalin is in the cocaine family.
- Studies have found children taking mind-altering drugs do not perform better academically.
- According to Dr. Mary Ann Block, author of 'No More ADHD', "If there is no valid test for ADHD; no data proving ADHD is a brain dysfunction; no long-term studies of the drugs' effects and if the drugs do no improve academic performance or social skills and the drugs can cause compulsive and mood disorders and can lead to illicit drugs use, why in the world are millions of children, teenagers and adults being labeled with ADHD and prescribed these drugs? ADHD is an invented label with no objective, valid means of identification."
"Millions of normal children have been horribly betrayed by psychiatry's unproven and unscientific diagnoses. Children need education, not mind-altering drugs".
Let's Help Our Young People: NOT DRUG THEM!
Research has identified these major stressors that affect children with ADD and ADHD:
- Protein deficiencies, especially children with poor protein intake and high carbohydrate and sugar diets.
- Allergies - many foods have been identified to affect brain chemistry, e.g. milk, wheat, sugar, food dyes, eggs and corn.
- Metabolic abnormalities, such as thyroid dysfunction.
- TV and computer bombardment - electromagnetic pollution.
- Developmental lags - poor lateralization of left and right brain hemispheres.
- Emotional traumas that block learning.
- High levels of lead can cause learning disabilities and delinquent behavior.
- High mercury (from amalgams and food) can cause agitation and depression.
- Nutrient deficiencies - e.g. studies have shown that children with ADHD have lower than normal body levels of the two key essential fatty acids, DHA and AA. The lower the levels, the more severe their symptoms and reading ability. Zinc deficiency has also been implicated.
What you can do?
- Avoid allergenic foods, and sugar which can make children too active or hyper.
- Add Brain Gym™ movements to your child's daily exercise. Developed by Dr. Paul Dennison to integrate brain hemispheres and develop whole brain learning. Contact Brain Gym™ instructors* in your area.
- Increase protein and essential fatty acids, such as Essential Omegas from Young Living, which contain the essential fatty acids - DHA and AA.
- Avoid commercial bath and body products. Over 4,000 ingredients can be used for a 'fragrance' on a soap label. According to Safe Home, Debra L. Ladd, "Clinical observation by medical doctors has shown that exposure to synthetic fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope and other behavioral changes."
- Avoid acne medications - found to precipitate episodes of depression and suicide among teenagers.
- Avoid pesticides (chemicals to kill insects, fly spray, etc.) can create nervousness, poor concentration, irritability, memory problems and depression.
- Start or join parents' group to speak out about the drugging of your children.
Use common 'scents' with Young Living organic, chemical free essential oils for personal care (shampoos, soaps) and brain function. Massage oils on neck and shoulders or inhale throughout the day. Apply on feet morning and night.
Why Common "Scents" and Young Living?
New research - Aromas directly stimulate the limbic system, the emotional switchboard of the brain. The sense of smell contains 10,000 to 100,000 times more information than sight, taste and touch combined! There are 800 million nerve endings for processing and detecting odors sending a myriad of messages to the brain instantly. Smell is the quickest route to the brain.
When inhaled, specific molecules enter the blood stream through the alveoli of the lungs. This enables aromatics to produce distinctive psychological and physical effects that affect mood, wakefulness, anxiety, etc. Findings show that oils, such as Orange, Jasmine and Rose, have a tranquilizing effect and work by altering the brain waves into a rhythm that produces calmness and a sense of well-being. Stimulating oils like Basil, Black Pepper, Rosemary and Cardamom work by producing a heightened energy response. In the UK, special needs children are given weekly aroma massages to help them prepare for school.
| A recent breakthrough study conducted by Dr. Terry Freidman (2001) showed the successful use of essential oils in helping children with ADHD. 40 subjects, ages 6-12, were given oils daily over 30 days, 20 controls and 20 treatables, using EEG brain wave measures. Significant results were produced. Vetiver showed 100% improvement, Cedarwood 83% and Lavender 60%. |
