HOUSEHOLD POISONS

STOP POISONING OURSELVES, OUR CHILDREN AND OUR PLANET

Many of our everyday products contain POISONS!

Information compiled by Dr. Sabina DeVita, Ed.D., R.N.C.P.

  • Oven Cleaners
  • Furniture & Floor Polish
  • Disinfectants
  • Lice Shampoo
  • Laundry Detergents
  • Fabric Softeners
  • Bathroom & Tile Cleaners
  • Drain Cleaners
  • Shampoo
  • Deodorants & Antiperspirants
  • Mouthwash
  • Toothpaste
The average household contains 63 different chemical products - approximately 10 gallons of hazardous petrochemicals, most in the form of household cleaners.

While cleaning and personal care products are not the only source of toxic chemicals in your home, they are among the most toxic and deadly.  Remember that most poisonings happen slowly, over a long period of time by gradual skin absorption or by daily exposure to toxins that we breathe.

Each year there are 5 -10 million household product poisonings reported, mostly of children.  Indoor air, according to the EPA, is 5 - 10 times more toxic than the air outside.

There are roughly 17,000 petrochemicals for public and home use today.  Petroleum pollutes the environment and every time we use a petrochemical cleaning product, we contribute to this pollution.

FORTUNATELY, THEY ARE ALSO THE EASIEST TO REPLACE

Why should 3-year-old Jason have died after swallowing 3 ounces of hair conditioner?

Why should 7-month-old Adrian have died after crawling through a puddle of spilled laundry bleach, which not only gave him third degree burns to over 50% of his body, but also burned his lungs from the fumes?

Or Peter, who in minutes of ingesting undissolved dishwashing detergent had a red face, which began to blister and the insides of his mouth were burned white (he survived, luckily, with no long term consequences), unlike the girl across the hall who required 30 operations to reopen her esophagus!

These horror stories are of children, what about adults?

How about Irene who passed out from breathing in the fumes from a bathroom cleaner or Mary who had burns on her hands as a result of the same product.

IT IS TIME TO PUT A STOP TO THESE AVOIDABLE POISONINGS!

These are some of the poisons that are used in our everyday cleaning products:

Formaldehyde, Chlorine, Naphthalene, Diethanolsamine, Chlorophenylphenol Ammonia, Bleach (sodium hypochlorite), Lye, Phenol Nitrobenzene, Cresol, Diazinon Chlorprifos, Phosphorus, and Ethanol.

Children are more vulnerable to toxic chemicals.  Many of these poisons have been proven to cause cancer, birth defects, headaches, loss of balance, memory loss, asthma, rashes, depression, joint pain, chronic fatigue, ear infections, burning eyes and many other conditions, such as learning disabilities, hypothyroidism and low sperm count!

These poisons are affecting the air in your home as you read this article, even though you are not using them.  Outgassing is when fumes escape from tightly sealed containers.  To get a real sense of this, walk down the cleaning products aisle in your local grocery store and you can smell the chemicals.  You may even get "woozy", have burning eyes or find it hard to breathe.

Products that you deliberately put on your skin or come into contact with while cleaning are absorbed into your body.  This can be dangerous and more so for infants and children.

However, there are SAFE ALTERNATIVES.
